The inaugural nationwide Fiesta, was held in June 2007 at University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. True to its theme of “Embracing Diversity”, the Fiesta was a celebration of women in all our differences. It also demonstrated the vibrancy of feminist activism in Malaysia, with about 500 people from all walks of life participating.
The event saw experienced activists and newer advocates, including 150 members of rural and marginalised communities, coming together to forge connections and engage in collective learning about issues pertaining to women’s rights and the local social justice movement. Various activities were held: workshops, interactive presentations, exhibitions, a marketplace, cultural performances, film screenings, etc.
FF 2007 was a resounding success and provided an encouraging first step for Fiesta Feminista.
